Calculate your scenario
Current grade G = Σ(category score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights of categories with weight above 0).
Your inputs
Default worked example. Edit the inputs to calculate your scenario.
Default worked example
Current = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight = 5,920 ÷ 70 = 84.57%; needed final = (88 − 84.57% × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 96%.
How to use the calculator
Enter each category's current score and its weight from the syllabus (leave unused rows at weight 0), the final exam weight, your target and your letter scale.
What the result means
Homework 92% (20%), quizzes 84% (30%) and a 78% midterm (20%) average 84.5714% so far; with a 30% final, reaching 88% overall takes 96% on the final.
Formula and units
Current grade G = Σ(category score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights of categories with weight above 0). With final exam weight f (as a fraction), the course grade for a final score x is G × (1 − f) + x × f, so the score needed for target T is (T − G × (1 − f)) ÷ f. Letters use the minimums you enter.
Worked examples
Three categories with a 30% final: Category 1 score (example: homework): 92 %; Category 1 weight (0 = unused): 20 % of course; Category 2 score (example: quizzes): 84 %; Category 2 weight (0 = unused): 30 % of course; Category 3 score (example: midterm): 78 %; Category 3 weight (0 = unused): 20 % of course; Category 4 score (example: unused): 0 %; Category 4 weight (0 = unused): 0 % of course; Category 5 score (example: unused): 0 %; Category 5 weight (0 = unused): 0 % of course; Final exam weight: 30 % of course; Target course grade: 88 %; Minimum for A (example scale): 90 %; Minimum for B: 80 %; Minimum for C: 70 %; Minimum for D: 60 %.
Example result: Final exam score needed: 96%; Current weighted grade: 84.57%; Current letter grade: B; Course grade with 100% on the final: 89.2% (B); Course grade with 0% on the final: 59.2% (F); Category weight entered: 70% in 3 categories + final 30%.
Two categories, 25% final, target 80%: Category 1 score (example: homework): 95 %; Category 1 weight (0 = unused): 40 % of course; Category 2 score (example: quizzes): 72 %; Category 2 weight (0 = unused): 35 % of course; Category 3 score (example: midterm): 78 %; Category 3 weight (0 = unused): 0 % of course; Category 4 score (example: unused): 0 %; Category 4 weight (0 = unused): 0 % of course; Category 5 score (example: unused): 0 %; Category 5 weight (0 = unused): 0 % of course; Final exam weight: 25 % of course; Target course grade: 80 %; Minimum for A (example scale): 90 %; Minimum for B: 80 %; Minimum for C: 70 %; Minimum for D: 60 %.
Example result: Final exam score needed: 67.2%; Current weighted grade: 84.27%; Current letter grade: B; Course grade with 100% on the final: 88.2% (B); Course grade with 0% on the final: 63.2% (D); Category weight entered: 75% in 2 categories + final 25%.
Limitations and common mistakes
Uses only the scores, weights and letter minimums you type in; no school's rounding, curving, drop-lowest, extra-credit caps or minimum-final rules are applied. If the category weights do not add up to 100% minus the final weight, the categories are scaled proportionally to fill that share. The letter scale defaults are an example; replace them with your syllabus.
Averaging category scores without weights; a 30% quiz category moves the grade more than a 20% homework category.
