Should translation be priced by source words or target words?
Use the billing unit named in the provider's terms. Source words are common because they are countable before work begins, but practices differ.
What belongs in fixed project fees?
Only the entered scenario controls the result. Possible items include minimums not already entered, file preparation, layout, certification, project management, rush work, or delivery charges.
Why can effective cost per word exceed the entered rate?
The effective figure includes fixed project fees and any minimum charge, then divides the whole result by source words.
Is the result a translation quote?
No. It is arithmetic based on your entries. A quote must define scope, language pair, files, deadline, included review, revision terms, and other charges.
How to use the calculator
Build an input-based translation estimate from a whole source-word count, an entered USD rate per word, a minimum language charge, fixed project fees and a discount. Fractional-cent rates per word are allowed. Minimum charges and fees use whole cents; discounts run from 0% to 99.9% in 0.1% increments.
What the result means
For one source word at USD 4.10 with no minimum or fees and a 15% discount, the exact discount is USD 0.615 and exact total is USD 3.485. These independently display as USD 0.62 and USD 3.49. Calculations retain full entered decimals; do not subtract already rounded result cards to reconstruct the estimate.
Formula and units
Raw language cost = source words × USD per word. Billable language cost = maximum(raw language cost, entered minimum). Subtotal = billable language cost + fixed fees. Discount = subtotal × discount percent/100. Estimated total = subtotal − discount. Effective total per word = total / source words when the count is positive.

Limitations and common mistakes
This is an entered-cost estimate rather than an invoicing ledger or a live quote. The discount applies to both the minimum-adjusted language charge and fixed fees in this model; vendor policies can differ. A zero-word scenario can retain an entered minimum or fee, but has no effective per-word denominator. Words are limited to 100 million and shown charges must remain within the supported finite USD range. Inputs retain up to 64 decimal characters and exponents from -308 to 308.
Confirm whether the quote uses source words, target words, characters, hours or another billing unit. Apply the minimum before fees and the discount once to the subtotal. Include taxes, revisions, rush charges and file preparation only when they belong in the entered scope. Positive amounts below one cent use three significant scientific digits; other USD cards round half-up to cents, and per-word output uses three decimal places with scientific notation for tiny values.
