Calculate your scenario

Average speed = distance ÷ time, distance = speed × time, time = distance ÷ speed.

Default worked example

Solved value Average speed 60 mph
Speed in mph and km/h 60 mph · 96.5606 km/h
Speed in m/s and knots 26.8224 m/s · 52.1386 kn
Distance 150 mi · 241.4016 km
Time 2:30:00 (2.5 h)
Pace 1:00 per mi · 0:37 per km

Speed = distance ÷ time = 150 mi ÷ 2.5 h = 60 mph.

How to use the calculator

Choose what to solve for, then enter the other two: distance with its unit, time as hours, minutes and seconds, or speed with its unit. Boxes for the value being solved are ignored.

What the result means

150 miles in 2 hours 30 minutes is an average of 60 mph (96.5606 km/h), a pace of exactly one minute per mile.

Formula and units

Average speed = distance ÷ time, distance = speed × time, time = distance ÷ speed. Time is entered as hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600. Exact conversions: 1 mi = 1,609.344 m, 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m, 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s, 1 km/h = 1 ÷ 3.6 m/s, 1 knot = 1,852 m per hour. Pace = time per unit distance = 1 ÷ speed.

Limitations and common mistakes

Average speed over the whole trip only: the distance traveled divided by the elapsed time, not instantaneous speed, velocity direction or acceleration. Stops are included if they are in the time you enter. Times and paces in h:mm:ss are rounded to the nearest second; other values round half-up to four decimals.

Typing 2.30 hours for 2 hours 30 minutes; 2.30 h is 2 h 18 min. Put 2 in hours and 30 in minutes.
