Calculate your scenario

Speaking time = words ÷ speaking rate (words per minute) + (paragraphs − 1) × pause seconds.

Your inputs

Default worked example. Edit the inputs to calculate your scenario.

Default worked example

Speaking time 0:21
Words 36
Characters (with / without spaces) 219 / 182
Sentences 6
Paragraphs 3
Silent reading time 0:09

36 words ÷ 130 wpm = 16.6 s, plus 2 paragraph breaks × 2 s = 20.6 s ≈ 0:21.

How to use the calculator

Paste your speech (or choose word-count mode and enter words and paragraphs), then set your own speaking rate, a pause per paragraph break and a silent reading rate.

What the result means

The 36-word sample at 130 words per minute takes about 17 seconds of speech plus two 2-second paragraph pauses, so about 0:21.

Formula and units

Speaking time = words ÷ speaking rate (words per minute) + (paragraphs − 1) × pause seconds. Silent reading time = words ÷ reading rate. Times round to the nearest second. Counting rules: a word is a whitespace-separated token containing a letter or digit; a sentence ends at . ! or ? followed by a space or the end of the text; paragraphs are separated by blank lines; characters with spaces include spaces and line breaks after trimming the ends.

Limitations and common mistakes

There is no universal speaking speed: pace varies with the speaker, language, audience and material, so time a real run-through and enter your own rate. Abbreviations such as “Dr.” count as sentence ends; numbers and hyphenated words count as one word each. Applause, slides and audience questions are not included. Text is counted in your browser.

Using a generic rate instead of your timed pace. Read one paragraph aloud at presentation speed, count its words and divide by the minutes it took.
