Default worked example

Melt value $375.09
Buyer offer $300.07
Fine metal weight 0.1875 troy oz
Fine metal in grams 5.8333 g
Spot price per gram of fine metal $64.30
Offer per gram of item weight $30.01

10 g × 0.5833 purity = 5.8333 g fine ÷ 31.1034768 = 0.1875 troy oz × $2,000.00 = $375.09 melt; 80% payout = $300.07.

How to use the calculator

Choose the metal, enter the item weight and its unit, pick the karat or fineness, then enter today's spot price per troy ounce from a source you trust and the payout % a buyer quotes.

What the result means

10 g of 14k gold holds about 5.8333 g (0.1875 troy oz) of fine gold; at an entered $2,000 per troy ounce the melt value is about $375 and an 80% offer about $300.

Formula and units

Fine metal (troy oz) = item weight in grams × purity ÷ 31.1034768. Melt value = fine troy ounces × the spot price you enter. Buyer offer = melt value × payout %. Karat purity = karat ÷ 24; fineness purity = parts per 1,000 ÷ 1,000. Unit factors: 1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g, 1 dwt = 1.55517384 g, 1 oz avoirdupois = 28.349523125 g.

Limitations and common mistakes

The spot price is whatever you enter; this page does not fetch live prices. Melt value is metal content only, not collectible, numismatic, brand, gemstone or craftsmanship value. Nominal karat purity (for example 14/24) can differ slightly from an item's actual assay, and stones, solder or plating add weight without metal value. Buyer payout percentages vary; the default is an example.

Weighing in ordinary (avoirdupois) ounces but entering them as troy ounces overstates the metal by about 9.7%, since a troy ounce is 31.10 g and an ordinary ounce 28.35 g.
