Calculate your scenario
Adult-equivalent guests = adults + kids × kid portion %.
Your inputs
Default worked example. Edit the inputs to calculate your scenario.
Default worked example
Adult-equivalent guests = 20 + 10 × 50% = 25; with a 10% buffer: 83 tacos.
How to use the calculator
Pick the menu, enter adults, kids and the kid portion, the event length and a buffer, then adjust the portion fields for that menu. Fields for other menus are ignored.
What the result means
20 adults and 10 kids at half portions count as 25 adult-equivalent guests; at 3 tacos each plus 10% that is 83 tacos, needing about 10.38 lb of cooked protein and 7.78 lb of toppings.
Formula and units
Adult-equivalent guests = adults + kids × kid portion %. Servings = guests × servings per adult × (1 + buffer %), rounded up. Taco bar: protein and toppings = tacos × ounces per taco. Sandwiches: bread = sandwiches × slices; meat and cheese = sandwiches × ounces. Popcorn: kernels (tbsp) = popped cups ÷ yield, 16 tbsp per cup. Ice: drink ice = guests × lb per hour × hours × buffer, plus coolers × lb per cooler × buffer, divided into bags.

Limitations and common mistakes
Portions and yields are planning assumptions to edit, not standards; appetite, other dishes and time of day change them. Quantities only; no food-safety holding times or temperatures. Ice means ordinary bagged ice for drinks and coolers, not dry ice. Weights are as served (cooked protein), so raw weight before cooking will be higher.
Buying raw meat at the cooked-weight amount: most proteins lose a good share of weight in cooking, so scale up raw weight accordingly.
