Calculate your scenario

Floor area = sum of each length × width − the excluded area.

Your inputs

Default worked example

Boxes to buy 8 boxes (160 sq ft for 158.4 sq ft needed)
Floor area to cover 144 sq ft
Flooring material cost $360.00
Underlayment cost $0.00
Labor cost $0.00
Total estimated cost $360.00

(144 − 0) sq ft × (1 + 10%) = 158.4 sq ft ÷ 20 sq ft per box = 8 boxes; $360.00 + $0.00 + $0.00 = $360.00.

How to use the calculator

Split the room into up to three rectangles, subtract fixed cabinets or islands, enter a waste allowance and the coverage printed on the box, then the price and any labor or underlayment quotes.

What the result means

A 12 × 12 ft room is 144 sq ft; with 10% waste you need 158.4 sq ft, so 8 boxes of 20 sq ft, which is $360 at an example $45 per box.

Formula and units

Floor area = sum of each length × width − the excluded area. Boxes = floor area × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up. Material = boxes × price per box, or boxes × coverage × price per sq ft (you pay for whole boxes). Underlayment and labor = floor area × your per-sq-ft quotes. Total = material + underlayment + labor.

Limitations and common mistakes

Prices, labor and underlayment rates are your own quotes; nothing here is a local market price. Trim, transitions, moisture barrier, subfloor repair, removal and disposal are not included. Diagonal or herringbone layouts and many small rooms need a larger waste allowance than straight lay.

Buying exactly the room area without a cutting allowance, then running short on the last row when the extra box is a different production lot.
