Default worked example

Switches ON 1, 3, 6
Pattern, switch 1 first ON OFF ON OFF OFF ON OFF OFF OFF OFF
Binary value 100101
Decimal address 37
Address range on this bank 0 to 1023

Address 37 = 1 + 4 + 32 (switch 1 = 1).

How to use the calculator

For an address, enter it with the switch count. To read a bank, choose “Switch positions → address” and type the positions as 1s and 0s starting at switch 1. Set the weighting and offset to match your device manual.

What the result means

Address 37 on a 10-switch bank with switch 1 worth 1 needs switches 1, 3 and 6 ON (1 + 4 + 32 = 37).

Formula and units

Each switch has a binary weight. With switch 1 as the least significant bit, switch k is worth 2^(k − 1) (1, 2, 4, 8 …); with switch 1 as the most significant bit the order is reversed. The address is the sum of the values of the switches that are ON, plus 1 if your device counts from 1.

Worked examples

DMX address 37 on 10 switches: Number of switches on the bank: 10 switches; Address (address → switches): 37 decimal; Switch positions, switch 1 first (1 = ON, 0 = OFF): 1010010000; Conversion: a2s; Switch weighting: lsb; Address offset: direct.
Example result: Switches ON: 1, 3, 6; Pattern, switch 1 first: ON OFF ON OFF OFF ON OFF OFF OFF OFF; Binary value: 100101; Decimal address: 37; Address range on this bank: 0 to 1023.

MSB-first 8-switch bank reading 00010011: Number of switches on the bank: 8 switches; Address (address → switches): 37 decimal; Switch positions, switch 1 first (1 = ON, 0 = OFF): 00010011; Conversion: s2a; Switch weighting: msb; Address offset: direct.
Example result: Switches ON: 4, 7, 8; Pattern, switch 1 first: OFF OFF OFF ON OFF OFF ON ON; Binary value: 10011; Decimal address: 19; Address range on this bank: 0 to 255.

Limitations and common mistakes

Device conventions vary: the weighting, whether ON is up or down, whether the address starts at 0 or 1, and whether some switches set modes instead of address bits. DMX fixtures commonly sum switch values directly; check the device manual before setting switches.

Reading the bank from the wrong end. Switch 1 is usually marked on the housing; if your device numbers switches from the other side, choose the MSB-first weighting.
