Calculate your scenario
Stitches per inch = fabric count ÷ threads stitched over.
Your inputs
Default worked example. Edit the inputs to calculate your scenario.
Default worked example
140 ÷ 14 = 10 in wide, 100 ÷ 14 = 7.14 in high; plus 3 in each side = 16 × 13.14 in.
How to use the calculator
Enter the chart’s stitch width and height (from the chart key), choose your fabric count and whether you stitch over one or two threads, then the margin you want on every side.
What the result means
A 140 × 100 stitch chart on 14-count Aida stitches to 10 × 7.14 in; with 3 in each side, cut 16 × 13.14 in.
Formula and units
Stitches per inch = fabric count ÷ threads stitched over. Design size = stitches ÷ stitches per inch, for width and height separately. Fabric to cut = design size + 2 × margin per side. Centimetres = inches × 2.54.
Worked examples
140 × 100 stitches on 14-count Aida: Design width: 140 stitches; Design height: 100 stitches; Custom fabric count: 20 threads or squares per inch; Margin per side (your framing or finishing allowance): 3 in; Fabric count: 14; Stitch over: 1.
Example result: Fabric to cut: 16 × 13.14 in; Fabric to cut (cm): 40.64 × 33.38 cm; Fabric rounded up to whole inches: 16 × 14 in; Stitched design size: 10 × 7.14 in; Design size (cm): 25.4 × 18.14 cm; Stitches per inch: 14.
200 × 150 stitches on 28-count over two: Design width: 200 stitches; Design height: 150 stitches; Custom fabric count: 20 threads or squares per inch; Margin per side (your framing or finishing allowance): 3 in; Fabric count: 28; Stitch over: 2.
Example result: Fabric to cut: 20.29 × 16.71 in; Fabric to cut (cm): 51.53 × 42.45 cm; Fabric rounded up to whole inches: 21 × 17 in; Stitched design size: 14.29 × 10.71 in; Design size (cm): 36.29 × 27.21 cm; Stitches per inch: 14.
Limitations and common mistakes
Sizes assume an even weave with the same count in both directions; some linens differ slightly, so measure your fabric. The margin is whatever you enter for framing, mounting or hemming; the calculator does not choose one for you.
Forgetting that 28-count stitched over two works like 14 count, or entering the chart’s printed size instead of its stitch count.
