Default worked example

Overall utilization 30.8%
Total balances $3,700.00
Total credit limits $12,000.00
Paydown to reach your target overall $2,500.00
Highest single-card utilization 62.5% (card 2)
Balance at your target $1,200.00

$3,700.00 ÷ $12,000.00 = 30.8% overall; reaching 10% means a total balance of $1,200.00, a paydown of $2,500.00.

How to use the calculator

Enter the balance and credit limit for each card (leave unused rows at a 0 limit), then the overall utilization you want to reach.

What the result means

Balances of $1,200 and $2,500 on $12,000 of total limits are 30.8% utilization overall; card 2 alone is at 62.5%, and $2,500 of paydown brings the total to the 10% target.

Formula and units

Card utilization = card balance ÷ card limit × 100. Overall utilization = total balances ÷ total limits × 100 across rows with a limit above zero. Paydown to the target = total balances − target % × total limits (never below zero); the table shows the same paydown for each card on its own.

Worked examples

Three cards with $3,700 on $12,000 of limits: Card 1 balance: 1200 $; Card 1 credit limit (0 = unused row): 5000 $; Card 2 balance: 2500 $; Card 2 credit limit (0 = unused row): 4000 $; Card 3 balance: 0 $; Card 3 credit limit (0 = unused row): 3000 $; Card 4 balance: 0 $; Card 4 credit limit (0 = unused row): 0 $; Target utilization you choose: 10 %.
Example result: Overall utilization: 30.8%; Total balances: $3,700.00; Total credit limits: $12,000.00; Paydown to reach your target overall: $2,500.00; Highest single-card utilization: 62.5% (card 2); Balance at your target: $1,200.00.

One card near its limit and one barely used: Card 1 balance: 4800 $; Card 1 credit limit (0 = unused row): 5000 $; Card 2 balance: 300 $; Card 2 credit limit (0 = unused row): 10000 $; Card 3 balance: 0 $; Card 3 credit limit (0 = unused row): 0 $; Card 4 balance: 0 $; Card 4 credit limit (0 = unused row): 0 $; Target utilization you choose: 30 %.
Example result: Overall utilization: 34%; Total balances: $5,100.00; Total credit limits: $15,000.00; Paydown to reach your target overall: $600.00; Highest single-card utilization: 96% (card 1); Balance at your target: $4,500.00.

Limitations and common mistakes

This shows ratios from the balances you enter; it does not predict a credit score or say how a lender or scoring model will treat them. Scoring models may use the balance on your statement date rather than today’s balance, and treat cards, charge cards and closed accounts in their own ways. The target is your own choice, not a universal standard.

Looking only at the overall ratio can hide one card that is near its limit; check the highest single-card figure and the per-card table too.
