Formula and methodology

Total watts = number of sets × watts per set.

Season kWh = total watts × hours per day × display days ÷ 1,000.

Estimated energy cost = season kWh × electricity price per kWh.

The 1,000 divisor converts watt-hours to kilowatt-hours. The calculator uses the entered energy price and does not add taxes, tier changes, demand charges, or fixed utility fees.

Worked examples

Twelve 7-watt strings

12 × 7 W = 84 W. Over 210 hours, energy use is 84 × 210 ÷ 1,000 = 17.64 kWh. At $0.16/kWh, cost is $2.82.

Compare a timer change

Reducing the schedule from 6 to 4 hours per day cuts modeled kWh and energy cost by one-third because runtime enters the formula directly.

Common mistakes

  • Using bulb wattage without multiplying by bulbs or using a package claim instead of total set wattage.
