Calculate your scenario

Total grains = shaft length × GPI + point + insert + nock + (number of fletchings × grains each) + wrap.

Your inputs

Try an example

Default worked example. Edit the inputs to calculate your scenario.

Default worked example

Total arrow weight 419.5 gr
Total in grams 27.18 g
Shaft weight 275.5 gr
Components (point to wrap) 144 gr
Grains per pound of draw weight 6.99 gr/lb

29 in × 9.5 gr/in = 275.5 gr + 144 gr of components = 419.5 gr.

How to use the calculator

Enter the cut shaft length and the maker’s GPI, then the grain weight of each component. Add a draw weight only if you want the grains-per-pound ratio.

What the result means

A 29 in shaft at 9.5 GPI with a 100 gr point, 16 gr insert, 10 gr nock and three 6 gr vanes weighs 419.5 gr (27.18 g), about 6.99 grains per pound at 60 lb.

Formula and units

Total grains = shaft length × GPI + point + insert + nock + (number of fletchings × grains each) + wrap. Grams = grains × 0.06479891 (exact). Grains per pound = total grains ÷ draw weight.

Limitations and common mistakes

Mass total only. It does not choose a spine, a safe minimum arrow weight, a draw weight or broadhead performance; follow the bow and arrow makers’ published requirements. GPI and component weights vary by batch, so weigh finished arrows on a grain scale when it matters. Glue and cut-off waste are not counted.

Multiplying GPI by the full arrow length including the point and nock, or using the uncut shaft length after the arrow has been cut.
